Certain
hairstyles may look fashionable but could actually be contributing to hair loss
in women. The hairstyles that potentially led to the greatest hair loss are
ones that cause traction at the root of women’s hair, or what is otherwise
known as “traction alopecia”.
This is based on a study by researchers from the
John Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore
The
researchers discovered a strong association between scalp-pulling hair styles
and traction alopecia. Though all women can suffer from it traction alopecia is
the most common type of hair loss among black women. Whenever a person’s hair
is pulled back tightly, ‘hair follicles are under continuous pressure.’’ The
article mentioned that women wanting to avoid hair loss from traction alopecia “Should
switch to other kinds of hairstyles that do not put pressure or lead to tension
at the root of the hair.”
